How big of a cam can I put in my 350 Vortec before I loose vaccume and need a vaccume canister
l put in a 350 Vortec crate engine in my 84 Z28 Camaro it runs great but l
want more Performance out of it and l want a really good sounding cam,
also do l need a taped cam in order to use hydraulic lifters? also im
going to replace the rockers with aluminum ones but whats the purpose of
using 1.6 versus 1.7 if the cam is not big enough to be able to really use
it? Oh yeah and one last thing, when l put in the engine the timing has to
be set really high, it has to run at like 32 degrees total timing in order for it just to run good but im assuming that its because its a high performance engine.
I will try to answer some of ur questions, but i don't have
enough information about the motor. First, is it a gen 1 or gen 2 motor?
Gen 2s used a roller cam shaft, so you can pretty much forget about
upgrading if it is got a roller cam, but that is unlikely, as this was
just a crate motor. What you probably have is a Gen1 350 with a flat
TAPPET cam, hydraulic lifters, & stamped steel rocker arms, 1.5:1 ratio. A
1.6:1 rocker arm will be the equivalent to putting in a larger cam, as they open farther & move further. 1.7 is not a good idea. best roller rockers out there are the Lunati VooDoo rollers, that is what I am running. 265 a set. i think for ur app, a good 262 cam would be as far as you would want to go, but if you just put a crate in it, i would contact the seller & see what cam it has in it NOW. step up from that. A 262 with 1.6s would be as radical as I'd go on the street. Also remember, that all new lifters MUST be used with a new cam, & the cam must be broken in per spec. Also, with a flat tappet cam, you MUST use a high zinc oil like Valvoline VR1 racing. Anything else other then high zinc will wipe ur cam lobes quick, & that sucks. New car reformulated oils have low zinc. 32° of total timing is right for ur motor at about 2500 rpms, all in, vac advance disconnected & plugged. idle should be 10-12° vac discon & plugged. if the vac advance is hooked up, it will read about 30-40° at idle. check ur rocker stud size, & app for vortec heads- need self aligning- etc. Call Summit tech- & Lunati tech. good people & prof advice. http://summitracing.com/parts/LUN-85310LUN/ http://summitracing.com/parts/LUN-60102LK/ http://lunatipower.com/ http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/CFrank773/TopEndR_Ba1.jpg http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/CFrank773/TopEndR_Bg001.jpg
You Can Take A Look At Summit Racing For The Cams That They
Have Listed That Will Fit You Application And Performance Demands And
Choose The Right One For You.
The Link I Provided Is If This Was My Z28 With A Vortec 350. Since I Do
Not Know What Your Gonna Do With This Car I Can't Possibly Choose The
Right Cam For Your Car. Me Personally, I Like A Street/Strip Setup As It Is A Little More On The Street-able Side In Case Is Have To Get Groceries Or Haul The Rug Rats To School. Good Luck With You Project
talk with parts store easy should stay under full race cam but
really pretty much what you want
