From the basic corner box filter to the wet/dry systems all

saltwater.
For saltwater a good cannister & protein skimmer will work fine. I
personally try to get filters rated 2-3 times what it says on the box, &
also multiple types of filtration. Live rock & sand is also the newest
trend that seems to prove itself time & time again. Multiple types of
filtration will allow for growth & mistakes. For saltwater a sump is
also a good thing because it allows different ways of filtering & also a
place to put new additions for quarintine.
For fresh I do the same as with my saltwater tanks minus the skimmer.
If you do use an undergravel system my advice is to use powerheads to drive
the water flow & vacume it while you change ur water. My experience with
cannisters is to fill them without carbon, & I only use carbon with my
hang on tank filters. Cannister filters are also good in that they allow
additions of different filtering materials, & can be run with other
equipment like u/v sterilizers & even undergravel plates. I use carbon
mainly for the removal of excess medication if it is really needed.
Overall for filtering a cannister is great & get the biggest one you
can. Also add a spray bar to help dissipate the flow as larger cannister
filters can be quite powerful. Another thing is you can make a prefilter
over the intake pipe to help catch things from the tank so as not to clog
the filter which helps in the lowering of maintenance. I did this with a
piece of sponge filter material that I just cut a slit in the centerand
slid it over the intake. Just slide if off & squeez it in a bucket then
reapply the now clean sponge.
Hope the advice helps, & good luck. :)
